Siglo XXIII, Nueva York. La vida de un taxista y ex-militar llamado Korben Dallas (Willis) dará un giro cuando conozca a Leeloo (Jovovich), la única mujer capaz de activar el quinto elemento y de librar al universo del dominio de Zorg (Oldman) y una siniestra raza alienígena.
